Eastern grey squirrels by Sue Landry. Note the dark coloration of the squirrel on the right. This is probably due to a hereditary gene that causes an abundance of melanin. Despite being given the name "black squirrel," they are not a seperate species. In this case, the dark squirrel is considered a subgroup of the eastern grey squirrel.
