Nighthawk Nesting Habitat Research

Common Nighthawk female by Rebecca Suomala.

In 2018 NH Audubon and the New Hampshire Chapter of The Nature Conservancy partnered with the Field Naturalist Program at the University of Vermont to bring graduate student Jason Mazurowski to the Ossipee Pine Barrens to conduct research on Common Nighthawk nesting habitat.

The goals of his study were to identify the number of breeding pairs in the Ossipee area, locate their nest sites, and characterize habitat features required for Common Nighthawks in a natural environment. His results provide management recommendations for maintaining nighthawk nesting habitat.
